As part of our commitment to your ongoing health and wellbeing one of the most important services we offer is early cancer screening. Cervical, breast and bowel cancer screening can be vital in the fight against illness as early detection can make every difference to the outcome. What better then, than to put these routine screening tests in the hands of those you trust? You could even enjoy the convenience of screening for all three cancers in one appointment: that’s the real benefit of Euromed.

Cervical Screening Test

Crucial for detecting abnormal cells in the cervix (the entrance to the womb from the vagina), the screening test doesn’t test for cancer but checks the health of the cells in the cervix. Around 1 in 20 women may have abnormal changes in their cells, which will need to be investigated further. In some cases, abnormal cells will need to be removed so they can’t become cancerous.

How often do I need to be screened?

  • Aged 25-49, every 3 years
  • Aged 50-64, every 5 years

How do I know when to be tested?

If you are not sure when you were last tested or know it has been longer than the suggested time, you should make an appointment. After that, Euromed will let you know when your next test is due.

What happens during the test?

If you can, you should try to book your appointment in the middle of your menstrual cycle (about 14 days from the start of your last period) as this can help a better sample be taken. If you use a barrier method of contraception, spermicide or lubricant you should leave 24 hours between using them and the test, as the chemicals might affect the results.

During the test, which normally takes about 5 minutes, you will be asked to undress from the waist down, unless you’re wearing a loose skirt, and then lie down. The nurse will put a speculum into your vagina, which holds the vagina open while a soft brush is used to gently collect cells from the cervix.

While it may be mildly uncomfortable and embarrassing, you can be assured of a sympathetic and professional approach at Euromed, as our staff will aim to make the whole experience as relaxing as possible.

Breast Cancer Screening

Although nobody wants to think about what could go wrong in the future, as many as 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their life, and early detection gives women a far greater chance of a full recovery.

How do I know when to be screened?

Women between 50 and 70 should be screened every three years, but younger women may be referred if unusual changes have been spotted in the breasts. If you are over 50 and are not sure how long it has been since your last test, or know it has been longer than 3 years since you were last screened, contact Euromed to book your appointment today. If you notice any changes in the breasts or spot anything unusual, it is important that you see your GP as soon as possible.

What happens during the test?

You will meet your female radiographer, who will explain the process and do her best to put you at ease. You will then take off your top and each breast will be x-rayed from different angles using the mammogram machine. While this can be uncomfortable, it will be over very quickly, and it might just save your life.

Bowel Cancer Screening

One of the most common forms of cancer, bowel or colon cancer is actually 90% survivable if caught at an early stage. Almost all colon cancers develop from polyps, which are benign tumors growing inside the colon. These do not normally cause any pain and often remain undetected for many years before becoming malignant. But they can be detected through a simple test for blood in the stool, and at Euromed we take the trauma out of testing with our calm surroundings and professional staff.

When should I be screened?

  • Above the age of 40, if not sooner, you should take an annual test.
  • If there is a history of colon cancer or polyps in your family it would be wise to be tested before 40

What will the test involve?

A small stool sample will be taken and tested for signs of blood. As always, you can rely on the Euromed staff to treat you with discretion and professionalism.
