If, for whatever reason, you have lost a tooth, you may need dental implants.
Why should you have an implant?
Tooth loss can lead to a number of issues including biting distortion, health problems due to altered eating habits, and feelings of physical self-consciousness. With bone loss of the mandibles, the face looks older. Dental implants offer a simple solution to this problem, and have proven results in restoring the functionality of the teeth and the supporting jawbone. As you would expect, our dental department offers the very latest implants and treatment pathways, so you will know you are investing in a smile to last a lifetime.
What is involved?
A dental implant is a titanium screw that is fitted into the jawbone. It is used as an artificial tooth root to support the replacement tooth, called a crown. Implants can replace a single tooth, multiple teeth, or all teeth. Dr Sofia will discuss which treatment option will be required depending on what your needs are.
The titanium screw will be fitted into the jaw, and after a period of several months the implant and bone will fuse together, creating a foundation for the crown to be attached to. Where more than one tooth needs replaced, an implant-supported bridge will be attached.
Dental implants offer an effective way to regain the look and feel of your natural teeth. Some benefits include:
- Aesthetics – implants are a natural-looking and comfortable way to restore your smile.
- Health – unlike many other treatments, implants do not negatively impact any healthy teeth and will not decay.
- Safety – implants are a well-established method of replacing lost teeth.
- Longevity – With proper care, implants can last as long as natural teeth.
- Implants can also stabilize ill fitted dentures due to extreme bone loss
Just like our natural teeth, implants require a high level of care in order to ensure long-term success. Dr Sofia will provide a detailed and informative guide on the maintenance of your implants, as well as recommending regular aftercare appointments. We also offer quality guarantee for all of the materials we use, as well as the implants, provided the patient does not miss follow up appointments that are required for maintenance.
Sinus lift augmentation
In certain cases, Sinus lift surgery is used to raise the sinus floor and develop bone for the placement of dental implants. Several techniques can be used to raise the sinus and allow for new bone to form. In one common technique, an incision is made to expose the bone. Then a small circle is cut into the bone. This bony piece is lifted into the sinus cavity, much like a trap door, and the space underneath is filled with bone graft material. Your periodontist can explain your options for graft materials, which can regenerate lost bone and tissue.
Finally, the incision is closed and healing is allowed to take place. Depending on your individual needs, the bone usually will be allowed to develop for about four to 12 months before implants can be placed. After the implants are placed, an additional healing period is required. In some cases, the implant can be placed at the same time the sinus is augmented.
Undergoing sinus lift surgery has been shown to greatly increase your chances for successful implants that can last for years to come.
