An ultrasound is an imaging method that uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of structures within your body. These images help detect, diagnose and treat a large variety of diseases/conditions. An ultrasound is used to:

  • View the uterus and ovaries of a pregnant woman and assess her fetus
  • Diagnose gallbladder disease
  • Evaluate flow in blood vessels
  • Guide a needle for biopsy or tumor treatment
  • Evaluate a breast lump
  • Check a thyroid gland
  • Diagnose some cancers
  • Reveal genital and prostate abnormalities

While standard ultrasounds provide images in two dimensions, 3D ultrasounds show these images in three dimensions. 4D ultrasounds take the technology one step further, and present a moving 3D image, where patients can see their babies moving inside their wombs. Patients are also able to see the foetus in life-like detail, particularly in the later stages of pregnancy, when they can even see their babies yawn, smile and stick their tongues out! 3D and 4D scans can also help diagnose/provide information about certain abnormalities, which might make it easier to plan treatment after birth.
